ISSUE 133 IS NOW LIVE!

Welcome to issue 133 of Boughton's Coffee House. In this issue we look how your business could be boosted by the way you buy your coffee, how to recruit great staff to your team – and keep them, plus we have top tips to tackle future supply chain problems.

With the annual conversation starter of ‘Hasn’t it gotten cold?!’ emerging once again as the winter chill sets in, we unfortunately find ourselves talking about Covid variants for a second Christmas running. Hopefully you have all been able to enjoy a good holiday season and are getting through the latest Covid wave as successfully as possible.

Looking beyond the ongoing impact of Covid on hospitality, in this issue we delve into some other aspects of business planning that need to taken into account. On page 13 – Chinks in the supply chain 2022 – Sue Quinn investigates some of the issues that lie ahead that will need close monitoring, from staff shortages to cost increases. And to tackle one of these issues, in our main feature – Purchasing power – we look at the various models of bean procurement, how they can work for your business and perhaps even provide a welcome boost.
In more positive features this issue, Andrew and Claire Bowen look at how to build your perfect team and retain it on page 32; Girls Who Grind show how they have been tackling gender inequality in the coffee industry on page 41; we see a welcome return of our Cafe Community round-up on page 36 of new openings and ventures in the sector; and Hannah Davies, founder of Manchester Coffee Festival, asks whether local is the future of coffee events in her opinion piece on page 46.

Lastly, we look at some new cold brew gadgetry making waves just in time for summer and find out How to embrace hygge with the Danish bakery in Wales showing why this style and ethos is the perfect fit for coffee houses! We hope you enjoy the issue.
